The Great Wall is more impressive when you know its history than to just look at it. When you realize that it was begun around 700 BC and was repaired and extended over centuries is what makes it so great. Even as recent as 10 years ago, they have discovered undocumented portions of the ancient wall covered by centuries of wars, weather, and erosion. The early walls were more wood and tamped earth though reportedly huge in scope. During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) the building methods improved dramatically using mostly stone and mortar. These sections have held up well.
