The first Emperor (221 BC to 206 BC)of that Qin Dynasty had them built to protect his mausoleum in the after life. They have since identified the extensive boundaries of that Emperor's mausoleum which he started on when he became King of his Province at age 13 and after he conquered all of China uniting the whole country at age 35, he added the soldiers to protect him in the afterlife. His mausoleum site with all its known components covers 22 sq miles. His tomb has been verified under a large mountain of dirt and will not be excavated for years because of the vastness of it. His dynasty died with him 15 years after he conquered all of China at age 50.
