Terracotta Soldiers

The overwhelming significance of Xian is that in 1974, a farmer was drilling a well and hit something solid and the well gushed up pieces of obvious man made clay fragments.  This led to the discovery of the Terracotta Soldiers.  This farmer is still alive today and is quite a celebrity.  The soldiers are larger than life fired clay statues constructed in a 15 year period during the first dynasty that united all the provinces of China, the Qin Dynasty (Chin Dynasty) which ruled from 221 BC to 206 BC.  This makes them over 2,200 years old.
