The portion of wall that we visited was built by the Ming Dynasty to protect Beijing when they moved the capitol there in 1421. The wall really isn't a single continuous wall but more like many sections rebuilt and added to with extensions in multiple directions over the centuries depending on the priorities and fears of the many Emperors to rule the land.
