The summer palace built in 1490 just outside Bejing is where the emperor would go in the hot season because it was cooler there Several buildings as well as a huge manmade lake was built. The total area of the summer getaway for the royals was 1.1 sq miles. This is a boat built (base built of marble) on the shore line for the emperor's enjoyment. Obviously not built to float. In ancient times it was said that the sea can carry a man's boat to his destination or it can swamp him and send him to the bottom. The Emperor had this marble boat built to prove the sea could do neither to him because he was next to God!
